The Izip Zuma Cantilever

Izip Zuma

2011 Izip Zuma

10 years ago, I bought a brand new Currie Cruiser which I still own. Despite the advances in technology, it remained my favorite bike with it's classic style, upright riding position and smooth ride. Now,  I have a new favorite cruiser: the Izip Zuma. It retains all the old school style, comfort and riding position, with a decade of improved technology. Featuring an alloy crank on sealed bearings, CNC machined wheels, and dual disc brakes -- the bike parts have all been upgraded. But it's the electronics which have made the quantum leap: A powerful 500 Watt rear-hub motor and a removable 11.4 amp Lithium Ion battery run through a dual-mode controller -- allowing both Power-on-Demand and Pedal-Assist functionality. It also features a Power Gauge, a Comfort Saddle and Leather Grips, versatile Kenda Kinipton Balloon Tires with Slime puncture-resistant inner tubes.

The Zuma is a blast to ride, particularly because of the strong motor which has gobs of power. It easily goes 20 mph, and gets there fast. It also pedals very nicely as a conventional bicycle, and cruises easily in pedal-assist mode for casual riding. The brakes are very strong, though like most mid-line discs, may squeak a bit. I found myself pedaling rapidly at 18-20 mph, while using the throttle as a boost to retain my speed. The Zuma is very close to the Pedego Cruiser in design, though for several hundred dollars less. The Zuma also has more power and has the Pedal-Assist mode.

There is a drag race video on YouTube where the Zuma smokes the A2B at:

The Zuma is not a fully accessorized machine like the Hebb: no lighting system, computer, fenders, etc., nor does it pretend to be in the same premium class of commuter bikes. But for casual recreational riding and just pure fun, it is a fantastic value and a great choice.

This is the original model introduced in fall 2010, available in either Conventional (Cobalt Blue) or Step-Thru (Burgandy) design.
