Magnum Metro/Metro Plus/Cruiser Review

The new Magnum Metro, Metro Plus, and Cruiser eBikes from Magnum are simply … Awesome!
I have been involved with electric bicycles in various capacities for over 20 years, and from my perspective, these new Magnum’s are truly a dream come true. Comfortable, powerful, long range, fun, versatile, built to last, and affordable -- they are truly the embodiment of how I envisioned eBikes would eventually evolve. Finally, the electric bike has arrived.
I liked last year’s Magnum Ui5 and all of my customers were quite happy with them. A beautiful fully equipped bike, people particularly liked the solid build quality, having both throttle and pedal assist, the fully adjustable Promax Stem, the comfy Schwalbe Big Ben tires, and the value at the $1695 price point. The only real criticism of the Ui5 was the controller which limited throttle speeds to the pedal assist level. Of course, for 2018, they've corrected this with a fully independent throttle, so the Ui5 is now a fantastic bike and no ebike comes close at that price.
But being a bit persnickety, I yearned for some upgrades: Namely 48 Volts, more power and range, better brakes, a centralized display, a fully independent power system, and perhaps higher-end bike parts. I personally made several suggestions to Magnum, as other dealer’s did, and I was thrilled to discover that Magnum responded to every single item -- producing a new generation of wonderful eBikes in the affordable category, which happens to be my specialty!
Notable Upgrades include: A powerful Das-Kit 500 Watt Motor, a fully independent controller, a huge 48 Volt 13 (624 Watt Hours!) Amp Samsung battery with gauge and USB port, a bright multifunction display, 180mm (160mm on the rear) Tektro hydraulic disc brakes, a Promax suspension seatpost, Wellgo platform pedals, a Suntour suspension fork, and upgraded bicycle components throughout. The Metro’s are also decked out with a Selle gel saddle, comfy faux-leather grips, Spanniga lights, aluminum fenders, a strong luggage rack, and even water bottle bosses on the top tube of the step-thru. I think Magnum has done a superlative job with parts selection, utilizing just the right grade of components for a balance of performance, durability, and affordability. And they are downright gorgeous with tasteful accents and a beautiful fit and finish. My only criticism would be to mount the kickstand on the rear triangle instead of under the crank so it doesn’t get dinged.
Being a performance enthusiast, I was elated to be able to exceed the 20 MPH throttle speed and cruise in the mid-twenties on Pedal Assist. I dialed in an ergonomically correct riding position and felt very comfortable. The controls on the bike are intuitive and well-placed, and the handling through the turns very sporty. I rode a brisk 35 miles on my first test ride through the Santa Barbara foothills, and still had 2 bars of battery remaining. The bike consumed the hills beautifully, hardly losing speed while applying moderate pedaling and smart gear selection. The Metro has a broad personality, having both smooth and gentle manners, yet is also powerful and fast with a high ‘thrill-factor.’ It’s a bike I will look forward to riding again and again. And it is a machine which feels solid like it won’t ever break. As a dealer, that enables me to conduct my business with a Golden Rule credo -- confident that my customers will love them and be happy,
